The most Impactful designer of the 20th Century. #theiconmaker

The World of the Icon Maker

By the mid-1950s, the Western World has fallen into a dull, smooth practicality meant to protect the people from any radical ideas. They watered down art to make it uncontroversial, unoffending, and uncritical – keeping peoples apart and separate. But bubbling underneath the surface is a radical sound traveling up the Mississippi with the Great Migration, Motown inspires and emboldens the youth, inviting them to break the mold and experiment with self-image and boundaries. And one young designer, Micki, will become the embodiment this magical vibration by connecting and making some of the greatest artistic icons in history, being dubbed as the Icon Maker

Who is Micki?

Micki, a.k.a. Mick Rock or Mick, is the most prolific 20th century designer you’ve never heard of…unless you’re a rock star.  He never sought fame while designing for super-celebrities. The “Creator of Icons” began his career in N.Y.C. in 1968 as kid with a great fashion sense and passion. He quickly learned the power of relationships and met a few notable music stars. That set him on his unstoppable quest, to change the look of Rock ‘n Roll and bring a defining elegance to leatherwear. Micki began designing and styling fashions for the most notable musicians and artists of the time. Cher, Elvis, Miles, Michael Jackson, Jim Morrison, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Sly & The Family Stone, The Allman Brothers, Alice Cooper, Peter Frampton, The Isley Brothers, Bon Jovi, Marvin Gaye, The Ohio Players, Basquiat (the painter), Sir Kahil El’Zabar, The Ramones, Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson, Flora Purim & Aiarto, Billy Idol, Steve Stevens, Herbie Hancock, Joan Jett, Donna Summers, Kiss, Motley Crue, Guns n’ Roses, Madona, Rick James, The Rolling Stones, George Benson, Britney Spears and many, many more icons of American culture. Micki also dressed notables associated with the sports and entertainment world such as, Don King, Ron Delsner (the promoter at Radio City Music Hall), Walt Frazier, and New York’s favorite D.J. and concert promoter, Frankie Crocker.  Micki also attained notability and fame as a costume and set designer during this same period, working in both motion pictures and music videos.

Micki’s specialty is one-of-a-kind, fine leather items made from the most select deer, lamb, nubuck and other fine skins. Each item is lavish and richly embellished with conchos, zippers, fringe, beads, hand painting, embroidery and studs; depending on his vision and created specifically for the personality who wears the garment.  Each item or “Ceremonial Costume” is made for that unique individual and is never mass manufactured. Because these items were made using animal skins, once living creatures, they possess a type of “magic” that could both turn heads and open doors.  You can see his designs being worn for stage performances, album covers, motion pictures, and as couture about town.  If it’s sexy leather and panache, it’s Rockwest.

After a hiatus to write his autobiography and produce a TV series, Micki is making a designer comeback under the brand, Rockwest. He is forging ahead to influence the next generation of musicians, actors, designers, and influencers through his stylings. With deep awareness of the past and what helped move social changes in society, taking notice of the similarities of the present, and envisioning the future for a new generation of STARS. Micki inspires those he designs for to be as unique as the fashion, stagewear and costumes he’s creating for them..
